My missus bought a red shiso plant some years ago...
And for all the following years, they have been self-seeding in our potager...
They are part of the mint family, so they have 'relatives' like the basil, sage, lemon balm...
Flowers are rather minute and quite pretty...
There are not many ways to use this herb...
Quite a range of uses..... drink and bath!!
ReplyDeleteOf which, both I enjoy...
DeleteThat is interesting..Do the plums have the flavor of the Shiso in them when preserved? I wish I could reach into your picture and try one! :-) robbie
ReplyDeleteRobbie, had a good laugh upon reading your wish about reaching out... :=)
DeleteYes, the plums do take on the flavor of the shiso...
Very delicate and nice flowers, love it.
ReplyDeleteIs it sweet to drink?
What does shiso means :)
Yes Ash, the flowers are very fine and delicate... a joy for the eyes... the drink is not sweet, and I take it as it is, unsweetened... The meaning of shiso? From its characters, 紫蘇, I can say that the first character means 'purple' and the second, 'revive' or 'to come alive again'...
DeleteI grew green perilla last year and used the leaves in salads as the Vietnamese do, I wasn't sure I liked them that much. Do you grow the green as well? Is the flavour similar.
ReplyDeleteLiz, the green perilla is more common and has a slightly wider use compared to the red one... it does take a bit of 'training' to acquire the taste of the green type... some folks say they smell like bugs... and yes, I grow the green perilla too... their taste and flavor is quite different...
DeleteShiso is very healthy although it's not easy to drink for me. :)
ReplyDeleteCoco... yes, shiso has a rather unique flavor to it... I have sun-dried quite a lot of them, and the sun-dried ones has a more palatable taste to it...
DeleteYou are gifted with another present for use as juice and bath.
ReplyDeleteTrue, a gift from god...
Deletewow interesting, it must be feels really good drinking and bathing with shiso
ReplyDeleteFeels good, yes... the bath is really nice...

ReplyDeleteI enjoy their juice too, with a little of ice sometimes...
DeleteLovely images for the red shiso, an herb that is new to me. How wonderful to grow plants that are beautiful and useful.
ReplyDeleteThank you Diane... I really enjoy having having plants like these...
DeleteYour shiso reminds me of my basil flowers, and the ideas of using in bath makes me think of my excess basil flowers too.
ReplyDeleteWe have been using this herb for our baths for many weeks now... really lovely...
DeleteDo you only use red shiso for making the juice or campur bahan-bahan lain.
ReplyDeleteWe use only the red shiso for the juice in this case... no campur-campur, yet... :=)
