Red shiso...

My missus bought a red shiso plant some years ago...
And for all the following years, they have been self-seeding in our potager...
They are part of the mint family, so they have 'relatives' like the basil, sage, lemon balm...
Flowers are rather minute and quite pretty...
There are not many ways to use this herb...
I sometimes make juice out of it...
And occasionally, I boil them to use in our baths...  
The Japanese folks use them (together with salt) to preserve plums...
Of course, we do likewise too... with plums from our potager....

      Yes, the plums do take on the flavor of the shiso...

    1. Yes Ash, the flowers are very fine and delicate... a joy for the eyes... the drink is not sweet, and I take it as it is, unsweetened... The meaning of shiso? From its characters, 紫蘇, I can say that the first character means 'purple' and the second, 'revive' or 'to come alive again'...

  4. I grew green perilla last year and used the leaves in salads as the Vietnamese do, I wasn't sure I liked them that much. Do you grow the green as well? Is the flavour similar.

Liz, the green perilla is more common and has a slightly wider use compared to the red one... it does take a bit of 'training' to acquire the taste of the green type... some folks say they smell like bugs... and yes, I grow the green perilla too... their taste and flavor is quite different...

    1. Coco... yes, shiso has a rather unique flavor to it... I have sun-dried quite a lot of them, and the sun-dried ones has a more palatable taste to it...
